After watching Question Time last night, I am annoyed as many of my other nationalist friends and colleagues. Now, this blog I hoped to make primarily on Advertising and Public Relations but I cannot escape the issue altogether.

Last night on Question Time I had a peculiar feeling, the feeling that Kelvin Mackenzie was right and that I agreed with him. Scotland deserves her independence and would survive. However the way the rest of them carried on was hilarious and I’d like to pick up on a few points.

The argument that we should remain as a part of a “united” nation because “we” fought fascism together is a disgusting one. “We” never fought fascism to protect Britain, but because it was the right thing to do. It was honouring a treaty with Poland. Scotland became a part of the British Empire, despite the fact many of it’s people didn’t want to be – in fact there were riots when the “parcel of rogues” bought and sold the Scottish sovereignty for financial reasons. Yes, that’s how we came to be part of this “united” Kingdom, they paid our parliamentarians and landowners to vote for it – if that happened today many would cry out at how unfair and unrepresentative it was.

In fact, the argument that Scotland should remain part of the UK often strays into fascist behaviour, with the claims that Britishness is the superior culture. Let’s look at this also – what is British culture – can you name any aspects of it? I can’t. I can name Scottish culture, English culture etc. On TV I see how queuing and not complaining is British culture? Really?! Never seen anyone in Scotland go,”oh that is so us!” It isn’t true that Britishness is a culture, it’s simply a name for what is English culture.

Then the argument that Scotland has long played a part in the empire and why should it end now? Well of course Scotland played a part in the empire – because it had to like many other parts of the empire. We just produced more during our stint in the empire because we where closer to England to provide shipping routes/docks etc.

The other claims and “arguments” too are quite frankly embarrassing. The claims that this is anti English is ridiculous – in actual fact it’s pro English. We want Scottish independence, this would stop Scottish MP’s (Labour ones mostly) voting on English only issues such as tuition fees. The claims that Scotland would not survive and indeed is subsidised is also ridiculous, it has long been said we pay our way, and in actual fact to some could be seen as subsiding parts of “Britain”.

The claim that we are just doing this as part of our “blame the English” routine is disgusting also – there are many English members in our party and many, many more who agree with the fact that the British Empire, built on murder and lawlessness should come to an end.

Then let’s not forget the jeers as someone suggested when we get independence they celebrate us not leeching off England anymore – that’s all well and good in my opinion but let’s remember it’s not an issue for the English as they get more than their return and have for many years because of their empire. This isn’t a quarrel with the English, but a quarrel with those who would seek to impose their “superior” British culture on others.

They cannot provide any positive arguments other than rhetoric, straight out of hymn and song books. “We stand together, taller and stronger” etc etc come on – the SNP have given you the reasons why, including figures – give us true figures – unlike the claims that Scotland is losing business, when in actual fact it is gaining business.

The claim we are now putting off the referendum is ridiculous. As Nicola Sturgeon said – we were told a referendum would be refused in our minority leadership in the Scottish parliament – so we won a majority and said let’s have it in the second half of the current term – which is what is going to happen. As Kelvin Mackenzie said, ” Alex Salmond is the only politician to have made a policy and stuck by it, God bless you Alex and let’s have your independent country” My god, this guy became my hero. Many English folk don’t understand this issue, and those who do are often on the other side – it’s nice to see some folk realising we don’t need a union to get along. I mean if Scotland was really a leech – cut us off (we aren’t – which is why they want to keep us as part of the union) they kept on saying last night too – we all benefit. This “we all benefit” means that they take our resources and rewards for this British overlord and spread it around the empire, then we all share the risks the British state takes.

Why not let England benefit from it’s own industry same as Scotland, Wales and the North of Ireland? This nationalism isn’t a narrow nationalism in fact more people are in favour than are against, with a massive undecided section – because for many years the media coverage has been  all over the shop – but now people are getting the opportunity to decide. The Scottish people are indeed intelligent enough, but they don’t want to have to rush the decision, many are unsure and would like to measure it up.

Just to finish up I’d like to say – the time for the British Empire is over. People used to say, “The sun never sets on the British Empire” and we were taught this in school – but let’s not forget, that empire was built on murder,rape,pillage,bribery(in the case of Scotland) and sheer fascism led by the monarchy and the English parliament. One by one nations have escaped this union, to which they were forced into one way or another – however this doesn’t mean they don’t now do business with what is left of the British Empire. Pakistan, India, America, New Zealand, Australia are among many nations who seem to be doing grand outside the Empire why not us?

I for one looked forward to the day where I am a citizen of an independent Scotland. A day where I know I will not have propaganda rammed down my throat about what is great about being British, and Scotland and many of the other last bastions of the British Empire finally see the sun set on this shameful period of history so we can work together as a family of nations in Europe and the world without any stealing their resources.

As some of you may have seen in recent days, one of the singers from the popular Girl group – Girl’s Aloud has been involved in a domestic with her partner. What this case has done is brought domestic abuse back to public attention in a way similar to the Chris Brown and Rihanna situation, although admittedly less high-profile.

However what it has also done is shown in a way similar to the Rihanna situation is shown how to manage the PR of a domestic abuse case – first of all as fortunate media attention for the client (Sarah Harding) in a time where she has stumbled into obscurity and secondly, as a way to hurt her partner (Theo de Vries) in the run up to what we can only assume will be a high profile court case where both will claim to be victims of domestic abuse.

In the space of two days we have seen several news articles in The Sun tabloid newspaper regarding this situation. First of all, news of the domestic came out. Secondly, Theo claimed that Sarah was in fact the one who attacked him and most recently she has done an interview with The Sun – complete with carefully choreographed photos of her with very little make up, but a small bit to accentuate her injuries. She is seen in tears in one photo and is made to look a lot more upset that in the photos of her partner.

Now the basic facts are, people are more willing to assume that domestic abuse is a male on female crime a majority of the time – and yes the figures add up, however I remain doubtful. It is clear that Sarah Harding is more well-known than her partner, that she is seen to be more injured than her partner and of course she seems to be smaller than her partner. I feel that this, is particularly good PR for Sarah Harding.

Not to sound callous but to me the run down of the situation seems;

• Sarah Harding and her partner are involved in a fight that will put them both in the dock
• In an attempt to spread his side of the story Theo gave an interview to the media
• This was leapt on by Sarah Harding’s PR team who, have not only seen the opportunity to attack the character of Theo, but to give Sarah a lot more media attention. Everyone loves a sad girl band member, a beaten pop star.
• Sarah Harding has unbalanced Theo’s claims she attacked him, by showing her more considerable injuries and allowing photos of her “crying” to be circulated.

What I now believe will happen is that Theo will have his public media reply, which will be ignored because of the genius PR undertaken by Sarah Harding’s team. She will probably see a whole lot more media attention, probably win the court case against Theo, have interview after interview in the media. Perhaps become the face of a campaign against domestic violence – and there might be the chance she could sell more of her music.

I mean I’ll finish up by looking at some lines from the article in The Sun.

“Now I think he’s full of s***. Reading what he said in The Sun, I thought, ‘Oh my God’. I never threw an ashtray at him. I threw a mug at him, because he was goading me. He was being so foul to me.” – it is clear from reading this she started the physical violence, yet this is shrouded in among lengthy detail of “his” attack and photos of her crying and showing her injuries – this was clearly the main aim of the interview, but what other motives are there. I think all the above possibilities could come into play, which could help spark up a bit of attention for Ms Harding in what was undoubtedly the lowest point of her career so far.

What do you think? Do you believe that this interview is simply a clever PR move by her team to move the blame firmly onto Theo’s shoulders and leave her in the clear. Do you perhaps also believe that the PR team seen the clear opportunity to promote Ms Harding a bit more than she is now, and also do you believe that Ms Harding will ultimately profit from this interview through positive media attention, music sales and the clearance of her name in court?

If you have followed the chaos on my twitter feed in the last two days you’ll have been witness to a bitter argument that has entrenched Scotland since the supporters of William of Orange came over to Scotland from Belfast.

In the last few months there has been argument over a bill which was passed by the Scottish government to make the singing of sectarian and threatening songs, at and to/from football illegal. This was passed much to my dismay as there were already laws in place to protect against this, but at least something has been done – we will have to see if it can be enforced.

But anyway, after this was passed I tweeted that now this has been passed, surely the next step would be to ban the Orange Order – one of the most bigoted Organisations around today. This drew criticism from a fellow party member, who misjudges my beliefs. I’ve had arguments with him before regarding schools of faith (which I support as long as there is demand) he has assumed on multiple occassions that as a former catholic celtic fan that my beliefs are all aligned. He proceeded to ask me what my belief was over the IRA. I didn’t really see the link from the IRA to the OO.

For those who don’t know the IRA are a group that has been present in Ireland in many different forms over the years, from an authentic band of freedom fighters to the modern day terrorists of the Real IRA. Anyway, I told him that “One man’s terrorist is another’s freedom fighter” which is true. He replied to me, that as a celtic fan catholic I most likely support the freedom fighter suggestion, which I do of the IRA before the 1921 treaty, which then formed the army of the Irish Republic.

However, I replied with sarcasm and said that as a rangers fan protestant he must support the terrorist banner for the IRA. I mean how he never saw through the pure sarcasm I’ll never know – but anyway this soon spread like wildfire amonsgt the Rangers fan community – most of whom are fine. However there is a minority that identify with the Orange Order and it’s loosely affiliated terrorist splinter cells.

I was quickly branded a terrorist sympathiser, by people who are members of the Orange Order or sympathise with it’s aims. I was branded as bigoted, for saying that we should ban this disgusting organisation which draws parallels with the KKK and in fact supports them to an extent. (See picture) . These people tweeted my friends and fellow party members branding me these disgusting things. Which  hope they don’t support as they know me and my views.

They then started to make out I was anti-protestant for not supporting the Orange Order, which my reply was that if their protestant faith was that important to them, why don’t they join a church group and not a bigoted organisation hellbent on destroying Catholicism - doesn’t sound very Christian…

They then drew up a page I’d commented on aged 15 which said all British Army soldiers were traitors to Scotland and claimed I was the admin – I wasn’t I just posted “Ban all Orange Order Marches now”. This was because they are protected by security that is paid for by the Scottish taxpayer. To put that into perspective – a group

that hates Catholics and agrees with many of the aims of the KKK, who deliberately march past Catholic places of worship (similar to Nazi’s marching past synagogues) doesn’t pay it’s own security costs – the taxpayer does….
All of this was carried out by people who had names that included dates that were those of mass slaughter of catholics. (Yep that’s their twitter name – could say similar to people using the dates of the holocaust in their usernames). They claimed they were impartial, but this mask soon slipped. They claimed that I supported Al Qaeda which was in itself nothing more than slander. I don’t support terrorist organisations which is why I supported only the early IRA and not the terrorist offshoot. (That picture of them doing Nazi salutes is great eh?)

They claimed that as someone who attended a Catholic school that I was raped by priests and was taught incest. That I was brainwashed and indoctrinated (as an atheist who used to be an alter boy this is laughable). They claimed that I supported the death of British soldiers – when in actual fact what I said was that a side effect of joining the armed forces is that you might be killed. I know this seems callous, but it is true – you join the army you might be killed.

These people continously claimed I was being bigoted against a friendly Protestant Organisation, which is hilarious considering the requirements for entry;

Now while this does have some Christian values, look closer at where it tells you a requirement is to discriminate against Catholics, don’t be frriends with Catholics, don’t let your kids be friends with Catholics and don’t attend Catholic ceremonies such as baptisms or funerals. Wondering if they enforce it? Well according to statistics( Eric Kaufmann, The Orange Order: A Contemporary Northern Irish Histor, Oxford, 2007, p.288.) 11% of people ejected from the order were for attending Catholic ceremonies, such as funerals of friends (who they shouldn’t be friends with because of their religion).

You also can’t be a member if you are related to any Catholic, Mormon or those of other religions – so by definition this organisation seems bigoted and sectarian.

Anyway, to summarise what my views are – after the out of context screenshots and drama I restate that I feel that bigotry in Scotland will not be solved until this organisation which preaches bigotry is proscribed, much like the KKK was (they are similar anyway, except they’ve relaxed a bit on ethnicity).

I do not support any armed revolution in nations that I don’t live in and restate that the IRA I agreed with was those pre 1921 treaty, who then became the Irish Army.

I don’t support British Armed forces actions overseas in anyway and feel that they should take a stand of observer rather than participating in wars and revolutions in countries they don’t belong e.g Iraq.

I am not a catholic and have no views of religion other than people should be free to practice any religion they want without being persecuted, which is where my disagreement with the OO an organisation hell bent in its constitution of destroying Catholicism.

I don’t support any terrorist groups and as a pacifist feel that the death of any  lad/girl serving in the forces is a sad one, but that part of their service to the armed forces of any nation except maybe Switzerland, is that death is a possibility.

Hope that has cleared up the muddy lies of those tweeting against me yesterday, who claimed I was raped because of my faith by teachers, that I was taught how to rape, that my sports team of choice makes me open to raping. That I was a nazi, despite the fact they are the ones aligned to the KKK and who enjoy nazi salutes (see above) etc . They aren’t impartial no matter how many times they claim to be – if they were why would their meetings be top secret, why would forums be closed and why would they throw out these disgusting claims against myself. They even made threats of violence.

Hey all,

I’ve slowly given into writing about this particular topic and I’m sure you all have too….x factor.

I know the title is, “Marketing made easy” and you are perhaps all tempted to steer away from yet another x factor blog post, hear me out. Another year of X-Factor is over, a new “winner” has been crowned and we will now have more people to star in the adverts on the next series of the show – but what did this series bring?

This series brought a fresh new number of incidents, rows and hate mobs – although to me that was all marketing. I know it seems obvious, and it is – but some people really don’t get it. It is surprising how long it takes people to catch onto something.

I will concentrate on one particular incident to show you how marketing was made easy. The incident I refer to is the “Amelia Lily/HMV” scandal. This involved HMV “accidentally” releasing the winners single of Amelia Lily, and only hers for a limited amount of time. During this small period of time, word had somehow spread over social media and quickly word of mouth. I would sit in work and listen to people betting on Amelia to win as they thought it was a fix, or people voting against her because they thought people would vote against her because of said fix. I’d read newspaper and magazine articles on the issue, read blogs and seen news reports.

I mean doesn’t it seem obvious what was going on?

HMV faced with yet another poor sale of X-Factor singles in this new digital market, they clearly didn’t have much of a marketing spend in among the usual christmas expenditure but yet they had to sell these singles. Solution? Well rather than pay for advertising, why not “leak” that they are selling only Amelia’s winners single (for a low price) and watch the free publicity unfold. HMV was suddenly everywhere, over all media – traditional and new media.

All I can say now is Amelia lost out to the public who never caught on, they all became walking talking billboards for HMV, spreading the news of HMV’s sale of X Factor music faster than any marketing campaign could. HMV probably saw a massive increase in online visitors, they may even have sold a few, but without a doubt the biggest coup – HMV is now fresh in the publics mind at Christmas.

Looking around today you’d not be surprised to think we’d transported back to the 80′s. There is a deficit, a so-called recession and there are left-wing groups sprouting up at every corner to combat the conservative government in Westminster, or the SNP in Holyrood.

These groups are suffering from a problem that has plagued them for many years, which is their poor image. They have not improved their image in years, unlike those on the left in America. Granted – American left is still to the right of European left – but they have a much bigger acceptance among the general public.

Anyway, the point is; The left in Europe, particularly the British isles is quickly and steadily contributing to its downfall, through its own ideology. This idea of solidarity has allowed left-wing groups to pool resources for many years, but also has contributed to the unclear messages they put out.

The poor image of occupy Glasgow

An example is the Occupy Glasgow campaign, they are different from Occupy Wall Street in many ways. Their message has become mixed, they have succumbed to the splits that has often plagued the left in Europe with a separate camp set up due to differing beliefs.

There seems to be a disparity in how the “99%” believe they come across and how they are actually seen. To them, they are crusaders for justice, they campaign for social equality and social justice. They are the policemen of the world, they are the 99%.

When to me, they are a tatty rabble of middle class and upper middle class students, who do nothing but protest and cling on to the popular causes of the day. They mix their lifestyle protesting with genuine causes. Far too often they have mixed messages, they create a poor  campaign and their implementation depends on how much they have had to drink the evening before.

An example of how they mix their protesting and real causes can be seen in the Save the Accord campaign in Glasgow. A campaign I was ready to get involved with and that many people found a genuine cause for, right up until the “left” got involved. They held a rally in Glasgow, that had a mixture of different people, present for solidarity whom actually where there to push their own causes. From the Hetherington occupiers (whom funnily enough, now occupy one of two camp sites in Glasgow – they seem to like this occupying lark) to campaigners for the local community.

I had constantly advised them that they needed to breakaway from these mixed causes and push their own cause otherwise it would be distorted. They either never listened or never agreed, because at the rally these people had a larger presence than real Accord campaigners and caused them to have no news coverage, through the local medias unwillingness to try to decipher and report the rabble that is the left.

Now, let’s look at the bad PR skills of the left too. In Glasgow a woman was raped at Occupy George Square. Here is the news report; 

This statement is very bad PR, they seem to blame the woman for her being raped and they drew much criticism from the feminist element of their support. This was all very quickly deleted of course from the Facebook. A regular occurrence, they often lock the page from comments, limiting the engagement they can have with people which only further alienates the people they claim to represent, the 99%, and delete comments which disagree with their cause, rather than debate. This is among the most poor PR practices that a cause/agency/service can adopt, but the left – oh no they adopt it across the board. Facebook censorship, youtube censorship – basically any form of media that is normally used to engage, is only used to engage if it’s positive, rather than for an open forum that they claim to be campaigning for.

Basically, what that rabble is about is that the left need to stop being so mixed, this idea of solidarity only leaves them open to alienating people from their cause, because they disagree with one aspect that has mixed in with them. They need to have better control over their image, whether it is creating a clear goal and ensuring that all marketing materials, propaganda etc is spelt correctly, that it is on message and that it actually forms part of a clearer overall strategy.

Now all of you have probably seen the new John Lewis Christmas advert, seen the wee boy and heard the music. In case you haven’t here it is, so you don’t have to leave my blog and search for it!

It’s a good advert no denying it. It takes a minute thirty of your life and in return warms your heart. Although contrary to what some Scottish papers say it isn’t the story or the wee boy alone that have this effect, it’s the music.

Some of you may disagree, many will not but John Lewis have used this tactic before. Using some clever movie like sequence and throwing in a great song to make it seem all the more magical than it really is i.e ;

I mean of course the concept is great but put the song on mute for both adverts and play the music for this video instead;

Not got the same effect eh? I know you could argue that it isn’t the same temp as the video, the same mood etc. However that’s what I want you to argue, the power of song is so much greater than without the song.

Songs make us think of the good times we’ve had, the memories we’ve shared with friends as well as the bad times. They remind us of our partners, family and those no longer with us. It is fair to say that without music, advertising would not be where it is today.

I’ll leave you with another video that used music to great effect, with a really obscure concept. The sales of the song in this advert below rocketed when it was used and had people talking about it forever.

Sorry for the absence over the last few weeks I’ve had no internet access that will allow me to blog due to dire financial state. Although…. I have reached a state of semi-happy. I now have a new job working for Ladbrokes in their PR team, a job which so far I am enjoying and will make travelling to uni financially viable as soon as pay-day comes around. I’m starting a small venture with a good college friend which will allow us both to increase the size of our contact base and array of skills outside education. I have also had some great personal experiences over the summer.

I write this now with a few weeks until university starts, with a few potential clients for myself and my friends venture and a budding new job. Everything is looking up, I have decided that with the excess pay I will save it, to fund a trip around the Eastern coast of the USA next summer, hopefully to cultivate some more contacts and friendships.

There has been tons happening in the world of politics, and I’m not going to bore you all with the details but suffice to say, there has been a few revolutions in the middle east, hacking scandals,England rioting, people digging Rupert Murdoch over nothing but their own hatred, leaving other media moguls to reap the benefits of the collapse of the biggest sunday tabloid. I’ve discovered that the train, attracts a whole different calibre of nutter than the number 41 bus does. Still from the east end of Glasgow and passes through Coatbridge, so still nutters none the less. The one benefit of the long commute time from Glasgow to Musselburgh for uni will be that my book shelf gets a lot more full which is always a good thing when the electricity gets cut off.

I’m still Director of Publicity for The Scottish National Party Youth Wing, despite some people calling for me to “resign” because I was upset at the media buzzword, “UK Riots” which no doubt caused damage to the Scottish tourism industry. The YSI has some great ideas brewing so, stay tuned for that.

Also, in other news. Abercrombie and Fitch have paid the “stars” of Jersey Shore NOT to wear their products in what can only be described as hilariously smart brand management. Does anyone think that Primark will take the same action with the “stars” of Geordie Shore?

Now straight away that headline looks quite interesting. I knew that when I typed it, and it pretty much encapsulates what I’m about to say.

I admire Rupert Murdoch because of his entrepreneurial spirit. You cannot deny, that to go from owning one newspaper in Australia to control one of the biggest media empires in history is certainly a great example of entrepreneurial spark.

Now I know many disagree with me, but understand this. I am not saying he is a great person, or someone to admire for his personality or personal life, but he sure is a great entrepreneur With a net worth of roughly, $7.6 billion and being ranked 13th most influential person in the world, that is a great example of taking something, investing, developing and growing something relatively small into something humongous.

Now I don’t admire tabloid newspapers, or the standard of his products. Neither do I admire his ways of working, but I sure do admire how he has the capacity to make money, more money and even more money.

He has had a record of his media using controversial, powerful and interesting headlines. Yeah most are shit, but they sell.

Look at other products that are substandard, such as microsoft. Microsoft is forever berated but it still sells millions. To have your media slated, by every credible expert year on year but to still continue to make profit and grow your business is an incredible feat of entrepreneurship.

Now while I hate his products, such as the News of the World  with their latest hacking allegations, and I am glad to see the back of it. I also feel sorry for the honest folk who lost their jobs, but maybe this will herald the bell for the improvement for tabloid journalism in the UK. I also dislike him having so much control over media, and there should have been laws against it, but while there aren’t you cannot fault him for taking advantage. Spotting loopholes and taking advantage of them to improve your business is what being entrepreneurial is all about.

Final words, I hate his practices and the way he has ripped apart lives,his sensationalism (although it makes him tons) and his general business practices. I also feel that to reach the 13th most influential person in the world and be worth what he is, you have got to be entrepreneurial, ruthless and basically all out to make money for yourself. I wish him luck with his purchase of BSKYB although I do not like his monopoly on media, maybe it will inspire someone else to provide an alternative. You know ,be an entrepreneur and provide an alternative to what so many people seem to hate….

I admire Rupert Murdoch for his entrepreneurial spark, the same way I admire other entrepreneurs for taking advantage of a situation and turning it to their advantage.

No matter what you think about Murdoch tell me this, what would happen if Murdoch pulled out of the UK and shut down all his media. He would lay off tons of workers, he would cause thousands of pounds of damage to companies that use his media for advertising, it would damage the public relations and marketing agency with the damage it would cause. It would also cost the TV channels that use the media, celebrity damage etc. It would properly set back the nations within these isles during these tough times even more

So over the holidays I have plans with a friend to do something a tad entrepreneurial. I mean I’ve always had that side of my personality, having won awards for a business I started at the age of 14 from the local library because I didn’t have internet in my home at the time. I’ve also got into the show, 30 Rock. There is an episode of this show that kind of summed up what I’ll be speaking about, Season 1 Episode 11, where the page-boy has a chance to get up a rung of the ladder, despite being “happy” with his job, this being a tv show it goes disastrously wrong but still, the point remains. (Apologies cannot find any clips!)

Why are people happy with the status quo?

I have heard tons of entrepreneurs say that, “Anyone can do it!” so why don’t they. I mean of course ideas, finances etc are all a barrier but not just in being entrepreneurial in the sense os starting a business, just in life?

I look at folk I work with, who are happy working in shops, people I know who are unemployed yet happy with the situation and those who get to a certain step on the ladder and just stop. I think to myself, “Why don’t you want to go up in the world?” I mean is this just me being egotistical and thinking I am better than everyone because I want to reach the top at whatever I do? Granted it will take years to do so, but I don’t think I’d ever just settle, I believe that’s what sets me apart from others.

Entrepreneurialism for me is about always reaching up, never being happy with the status quo, but not disgruntled with it either.

I mean, many are happy with said jobs, and I respect them because of course we need lollipop men and retail workers, but do these people really feel happy with their positions, or do they dream of something better? I mean surely everyone wants to fulfill their dreams, so why doesn’t everyone make attempts to do so? Am I just more ambitious than others, are their goals fulfilled at whatever stage they are at? Or am I just being egotistical when I think to myself, “Why don’t you want to be at the top?”

That’s just what goes on in my head!
